The common marmoset is a gum-feeding specialist, with gouging lower incisors to excavate holes in gum-producing trees to guarantee gum year-round. They have well developed epidermal scent glands and scent-marking behaviors. They become sexually mature at 18-24 months.
Although common in many localities, some populations are declining due to habitat destruction in many parts of their range.
