The City of Alexandria has owned and operated the Alexandria Zoo since 1926. The Zoo operates under the Public Works Division of the City.
FOTAZ was formed in 1971 by a group of concerned citizens. Proceeds collected from memberships and special events promoted by FOTAZ go toward zoo improvements and other zoo projects.
The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), founded in 1924, is the world's largest professional organization representing zoological parks, aquariums, wildlife parks, and their staff members.
Alexandria Zoo has been honored with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' (AZA) Quarter Century Award for over 25 years of continuous accreditation. The award recognizes Alexandria Zoo's commitment to maintaining the highest standards in animal care, welfare, management, veterinary care, conservation, education, staffing, facilities, safety, guest services, and more. Alexandria Zoo has been accredited since 1986.
