Zoo Volunteers

Being a VOLUNTEER involves a myriad of wild challenges and unforgettable experiences.

Volunteer opportunities for both teens and adults await individuals who are interested in animals, zoos and spreading the message of conserving wildlife.

Explorer registration is December 15th through January 15th. Docent registration is in January.

What is an Explorer?
Explorers are teens (at least 14 years of age) who offer volunteer service to the Zoo through a variety of duties that include zookeeper assistance, special events, grounds maintenance, construction and education programs. The Zoo Explorer Post is a coed program of Boy Scouts of America sponsored by the City of Alexandria.

What is a Docent?
Docents are adults who offer volunteer service in the areas of education, animal care, zoo keeper assistance, grounds maintenance and landscaping, construction, summer camp, public relations, office work, and many other activities. Plus all activities and special events like Zoo Day, Zoo Boo and Summer Safari Camp also depend on volunteer assistance.

"Imagine the impact we can all have
if we work together on creating coherent
messages and positive actions."
