City of Alexandria

The City of Alexandria (COA) has owned and operated the Alexandria Zoo since 1926. The Zoo operates under the Public Works Division of the City. Although the Zoo Administration can recommend policies for the Zoo, this is actually decided by the City Council and Mayor.

FOTAZ (Friends of the Alexandria Zoo)

Formed in 1971 by a group of concerned citizens. Now memberships total approximately 1500. Memberships are sold in the office. Single memberships are $30 and family memberships are $50. Fees collected from memberships and special events promoted by FOTAZ go toward zoo improvements and other zoo projects.

AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums)

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is the world's largest professional organization representing zoological parks, aquariums, wildlife parks, and their staff members. It was founded in 1924 and its offices are located in Silver Spring, Maryland.

AZAD (Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents)

The Association of Zoo and Aquarium Docents is dedicated to the continuing education of zoo volunteer educators. Any docent can join and receive a member's newsletter. A national conference is held annually.
